no, because if the student gets a low grade he will become discouraged and could abandon hope of learning the subject in question. Besides, a grade doesn't represent the amount of knowlege a person posesses, only how much he studied. There is more than one ability to learn, the knowledge could be proved trying with the skills each of the students have. So I think the prefessor should have the talent to recognize which student has each skill (visual, auditive, kinetics) and based in this, make the exam. I know is difficult but only by this method the grades could be fair. I am sure that you are thinking that the student who has the knowledge could do an exam in whatever way he desires.

By the other way, if the errors marked in an exam do not be stressed with numbers but with notes which start to grow interest about why the error was, could be better. In my case, my errors have teched me more than my correct answers, not only in class but in my life.

I think it could be both options true or useful but it depends on what kind of subject is... If the subject is about mathematics it would be assume that mathematics is learned doing exercises and will be useful to evaluate the advance with an exam.

By the other hand if the course is about civics or beliefs of the culture or ethics i can say that may the pupils can be evaluated by an exposition about an especific topic, writing an essay or explaining their opinion in a special kind of moderated argument.

Well, sometimes grades encourage students, but most of the times they are just numbers without a meaningful sense for them. I know students whose grades are the most important fact in their learning. In other words, these kind of students will do anything to obtain a good grade from studying hard to cheatting. On the other hand, there are students that prefer knowledge instead of a good number. Grades are seen as a requirement to pass a course. Therefore, students will see them as an obstacle to their learning. I think that this point of view is an error made by academic institutions. They have given grades a huge value. Students get stressed when they hear the word: exam. Due to the fact that exams result in grades, students know how important is to pass them. So, grades serves as a barrier more than a encouragement for students.

One the one hand, I think some times grades encourage some kind of students to study and learn, in this case I think grades play a very important role on students learnning because if they get a bad grade they are going to feel they are not doing their best, in other words this situation will motivate them to study harder and as a concequence to lern.

On the other hand, I think bad grades wouldn´t encourage students to lean, because if they get them this is going to make them feel bad an that they just can´t learn or even thet they are bad students.

I think this is a matter of selfsteam.

Since my point of view grades represent a goal I can get with a big effort, so if I want to get a good grades I need to study, to pay attention during the class, to do my homework and some other excersises or activities that can help me to improve my knowledge. And if I get bad grades it makes me think about what I did wrong or what can I do to get better ones.
Unfortunatly, there are some times that grades don´t represent what you have lerned, because of the subject, the evaluation, the teacher or the student. But must of the times I think that can help you or encourage you to continue learning.

I think yes, but it depends of many situations. However, I belive all of that cuold be englobe in one idea:
>> Grades encourage students as a response of a social, familiar, cultural, etc, demand.
That's why sometimes, obtain good grades could generate psychic problems like: stress, depression.
That's no good, 'cause many times numbers doesn't mean anything. I know some persons that have good grades but they aren't very smart or goodworking, instead they are very skilled in searcing easy teachers.
By the other way, there are cases of student with regular or bad grades but very succesful at work and life.

Well in my personnal opinion marks do not reflect sometimes the true knowledge, so teachers can design other way to evaluate their students, because of nervousness the kids can forget the answers. Maybe teacher can develop more than one way to mark, like oral test, playing test. Teacher have to recognize skills, personalities even interests to make it, or can propose different ways to be evaluated and the student can take the better choice as his own needs.

It sounds like most of you are of the opinion that grades tend to be artificial, manipulated (by teachers and students), and not very representative of what a student has learned. Maybe like "Luigi" said, good grades can be a sign that students are skilled in finding "easy" teachers. I think this idea is not infrequently shared by many students, not to mention teachers as well. Still, I think if students have a chance to add their input into how they will be graded and on what, making some exam (the dreaded word) or assignment challenging yet fair, grades can become much more meaningful.
